Well. It has been a year and half since my last post. A lot has been changed since then. Obviously, teaching my mom to use Meego didn't work out that well, as you can see there weren't any blogs following the prequel, mainly due to me being lazy or my mom's lack of interest of learning. I did try to teach her to use the OS but problems immediately came up with the hardware compatibility, a common Linux issue. It shouldn't be that difficult to fix those problems, but that made me realize the OS was still in an early stage of development. The user experience might not be optimal for my mom, so I put my idea to rest. However, I still haven't gave up on Meego just yet.
When the MeeGo-powered ASUS Eee PC X101 just came out, I convinced my brother to get that netbook and try out MeeGo OS, so that he can let me know how the user experience is like on a daily basis. I guess I was not being a great brother after all, as I didn't put my brother's best interest above my curiosity. It turned out he wasn't satisfied with the OS. he constantly complained the limited functions of the OS, particularly the lack of multitasking and the lack of available apps. As resourcefulness runs into my family, my brother decided to go on a quest to find the right OS and he found jolicloud , a Linux-based cloud OS. I haven't used the OS personally and did not know much about it, so I heavily relied on my brother's opinions (if you use the Google chrome browser, you can install their chrome app to experience the OS yourself). Based on what he told me,the OS works just like IOS on iPad. It works well only if there is an internet connection. Since he needed to take his netbook everywhere he went, the OS was not really a right fit. Finally, he gave up jolicloud and switch to a proper Linux solution: ubuntu for having the right kind of computing experiences.
If you think this would lead to the happy ending, well think again. My brother still complains about how slow the ubuntu is. I suggested it had something to do with the fact that he was using a netbook. The computing power is not exactly known to be the strength of a netbook, I reasoned. Like what other siblings would do , he disagreed with me and insisted there is something wrong with the OS. Then like what other siblings would do, a civilized discussion turned into silly shouting match. Anyway, he is still trying to find a new OS that can meet his high if not impossible expectations. I suggest him to write one himself. As for Meego, I wished it all the luck in the world. With the departure of Nokia, the development of Meego is basically over. Intel decided to partner up with Samsung to develop Tizen, a cross-devices platform, as a replacement for Meego. However, things may be over for netbook ( but to be honest, who are still using netbook?), but for mobile devices, MeeGo is still pretty much alive because of the great people from Jolla and Mer.
p.s This is a very brief summary of what happened to MeeGo. The history of MeeGo is long and complicated. There are a lot of good articles on the web that talk about the evolution of MeeGo. Maybe, one day I will write one too. As for now, the journey has ended, but feel free to check out my new blog:
